Transatlantic take on Horsham life

AN ONLINE writer from Horsham, known for his witty take on life in the UK, has had his first book published.

Michael Harling, 54, moved here from the US in 2002, and has been entertaining internet audiences with his wry observations about Britain ever since.

Many more of his thoughts are now available in print as Postcards From Across the Pond – Dispatches From an Accidental Expat.

Although frequently amused – or just baffled – by the British way of life, Michael has an obvious fondness for his adoptive country and its people's habits.

Commenting on a rainy afternoon at a Brighton and Hove Albion game – his first experience of a live 'soccer' match – he writes:

'If an American finds himself sitting in the rain watching a ball game, he'll build a covered stadium – complete with Astroturf, artificial lighting and climate control – and then sit there feeling superior because he's conquered the weather.

'When a Brit finds himself sitting in the rain, he zips his waterproof, puts on a cap and feels virtuous because he can cope with the weather without undertaking a major construction project.

'It's one of the prime differences between America and the rest of the world, and I happen to like this way better; Americans spend far too much time in artificial environments.'

Mr Harling told the County Times: "Everything's different here – that's what the book is about."

Mr Harling will be signing copies of his book tomorrow (Saturday February 21) at Waterstone's in the Carfax, Horsham, between 11am and 2pm.
