A cottage near the old West Grinstead Station was among the properties sold by West Sussex County Council last week raising more then £550,000.
A detached two-bedroom house, formerly used as a ranger’s post, has gone under the auctioneer’s hammer for £216,000.
Station House in Cowfold Road, West Grinstead was among 26 lots being sold by the regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson.
Forming part of the area known as The Old West Grinstead Station, the property backs the 37-mile route known as The Downs Link, which follows two disused railway lines linking the South Downs Way with the North Downs Way.
A pair of semi-detached rural cottages near Horsham, also owned by West Sussex County Council, went for £240,000 freehold. The properties are at 1 and 2 Gunbarn Crossing Cottages, Dorking Road, Kingsfold, and are said to be in need of complete modernisation and repair.
A spokesman from WSCC said: “The property Station House at West Grinstead was used by the Countryside Rangers who now operate out of other WSCC buildings.
“This was one of the 43 buildings that we are closing as part of our Way We Work programme saving £1.9m annually – we have so far come out of 36 buildings.
“The remaining two buildings were properties held for possible highways schemes.
“It is a requirement that these receipts go back into the county council’s corporate funds for investment in future capital projects, whether this be the maintenance of the highway or improvements to libraries or day centres.
“They are not ring-fenced to any service.”
Also in the auction last Wednesday was a commercial studio which fetched £62,000; the freehold premises is called the Flower Studio at High Street, Loxwood.
