Tarring couple trapped in home after fire

A WORTHING couple had a lucky escape after they became trapped in their smoke-filled bungalow, following a suspected arson attack.

The couple, thought to be in their 60s, were woken when their home in Rackham Road, near the junction of Ringmer Road, filled with smoke in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, November 25).

As the couple tried to escape, they became trapped in their porch – unable to open the front door.

It took police, fire fighters and the owners to eventually get the door open.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman, Gary Towson, said the fire service was working with police to investigate whether the fire was started deliberately.

The fire crew said the fire started in a bin, spreading to the conservatory at the back of the bungalow and filling it with smoke.

The couple were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Worthing fire crew received numerous calls yesterday (Tuesday, November 24) after a hedge was deliberately set alight in Lindum Way, Tarring.

Fire fighters arrived at 11.40pm and used four hose reels to get the blaze under control, with smoke billowing around the area.

The crew was then called to Selsey Close at 12.10am today (Wednesday, November 25) after a bush was deliberately set on fire.

The son of the home-owner tried to tackle the fire as it was close to the house, but eventually had to call for help.

Police launched its helicopter to help with the investigations.
