Takeover Day - take part in West Sussex

West Sussex organisations and businesses are being urged to sign up for Takeover Day 2012 and let young people join them for the day, giving them the chance to experience the world of work and make their voices heard.

Organised by the Children’s Commissioner for England, Takeover Day offers children and young people across the country the chance to work with adults and get involved in decision-making in all kinds of organisations.

Anyone can get involved and be ‘taken over’ for a day – businesses, schools, newspapers, TV and radio stations, banks, charities, councils. The list is endless.

Children benefit from the opportunity to experience the world of work and make their voices heard, while adults and organisations gain a fresh perspective on what they do from young people.

It could mean inviting young people to try out jobs, offer their perspective on key issues or being involved in decisions, job shadowing or taking charge of budgets.

West Sussex County Council cabinet member for children and families Peter Evans said: “Takeover Day is a good opportunity for all organisations and businesses. In 2011, I was accompanied by three young people from Forest High School, giving them an insight into the work of a cabinet member.

“Everyone who took part in the event last year agreed it really helped to break down barriers, and encouraged cohesion between generations and across communities.

“It’s a chance to learn fresh ideas, insight and creativity and to get a better understanding of your organisation or business from the perspective of children and young people.”
