Sussex links to Jimmy Savile’s trail of victims

Police investigating sex offences committed by the late Jimmy Savile now estimate that there are about 60 possible victims, nationwide.

Eight cases had been reported to Sussex Police but the force has now passed its files to the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), which is now handling the inquiry into the celebrity. Police said Savile had now been revealed to be a sexual predator who targeted children.

MPS representative Eddie Townsend said they are still breaking down the reports by region, and cannot yet give an official figure for how many relate to Sussex. He added that they are now looking at cases which involve around 60 victims across the UK. Last week, the official estimate was between 20 and 25.

Jimmy Savile, who was knighted in 1990 for services to charity, died last October aged 84. He had been a household name since 1964, when he was a presenter on the first edition of Top of the Pops.

His long career on TV and radio included presenting BBC TV programme Jim’ll Fix It.

Since his predatory sexual behaviour became public knowledge there have been calls for him to be stripped of his knighthood, although technically a knighthood expires when the recipient dies.

A statement from Commander Peter Spindler, head of the MPS Specialist Crime Investigations branch said: “We can now confirm that we have received information from the public that suggest allegations against Jimmy Savile span six decades with reports starting in 1959 up to and including 2006.

“Having now had the opportunity to review progress one week on I have revised my estimate of the number of likely victims to be about 60.

“Once again I want to thank those who have come forward and reassure them, and anyone else who contacts us, they will be listened to.”
