'Sussex drivers still flout drink law'
DRIVERS are continuing to flout drink drive laws in Sussex as the national summer drink drive campaign moves into its fourth week.
Since the campaign started on June 1, 2363 drivers have been tested at the roadside with 97 (4.1%) arrested after providing a positive sample.
Of these, 76 (3.68%) had not been involved in a collision, whereas 21 (6.95%) had.
Ch Insp Di Roskilly from Sussex Police's road policing unit said: "We are continuing to reinforce the message that drink driving is not only unacceptable, it is potentially life-threatening.
Whilst the majority of people stopped have not been drinking, unfortunately some people continue to put their's and others lives at risk.
Although this is of concern, we are catching a growing percentage of offenders before they do any damage to themselves or anyone else.
"Some are habitual drink drivers who blatantly flout the law time and time again, others are genuinely horrified to discover that they are over the limit. However, there is no excuse.
"The don't drink and drive message is being hammered home constantly and if you still choose to ignore it, then you need to hope that we catch up with you before you kill someone.
"Drink or drive. We don't mind which - just don't do them both."
If you suspect someone of drink-driving you can report them via the Operation Crackdown website - www.operationcrackdown.org - or by calling 0845 60 70 999 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If the offence is taking place, dial 999 immediately.
