A joint effort by Shoreham and Southwick Rotary Club and Steyning and Henfield Rotary Club meant a fibreglass boat could be purchased for the fishermen of Tagum, a village ravaged by typhoons and tsunamis.

Denis Cummings, president of Steyning and Henfield Rotary Club, said: “Most of the trees in the forest and the houses had been razed to the ground and the fleet of 60 wooden boats reduced to matchwood.

“The Rotary clubs jointly donated a fibreglass boat to the fishermen of Tagum. If they can fish, they can eat and earn. If they can earn, they can repair their houses.

“This is a particularly good example of sustainable support where Rotary is keen to help.”

Club members gathered on Saturday to hear about life for the villagers.

Keith Clarke, a guest speaker from Rustington Rotary Club, told the story of Tagum fishermen and said all their wooden boats had been destroyed by recent storms, together with most of the houses.
