Squirrel is a white rarity

A RARE albino squirrel has been spotted in a Horsham garden.

The white squirrel was photographed outside Barbara Poulter's home in Lime Avenue.

"It was incredible to see an animal like this in our garden," she said. "Our neighbours have seen it running around for the last few weeks, but we hadn't seen it until now.

"It was nice to be able to get a picture of it because we wanted to show people how strange it is."

About ten squirrels in every million are born completely white due to albinism, a condition which can also affect birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians and mammals, including humans. In most species, albinos have a low life expectancy because they are highly visible to predators or to their prey.
