Sport sessions were held in Storrington over the summer holidays this year to provide positive and enjoyable activities for children in the Ravenscroft area.
The sessions were held twice a week and were aimed at 12 to 16 years olds who were interested in taking part in football and cricket.
They were run jointly by Horsham District Council and Sussex Police and funded by Green Oak Housing.
In 2011 there had been 12 complaints from local residents about youths hanging around and making noise. This summer there were none.
Storrington Parish Council allowed the use of Ravenscroft Ball Court and Horsham District Council provided staff to help run the sessions, which were well attended, in particular the football, and there has been a lot of positive feedback.
One 14-year-old said: “It gives us something to do over the summer, I’d be hanging around bored otherwise.”
Ben Williams from Green Oak Housing, which arranged the funding, said:
“Greenoak Housing Association is very happy to have funded these sessions for children in and around Abbey Walk and Ravenscroft during the school holidays.
“We believe it’s vitally important that young people are offered the opportunity to participate in sport and are encouraged to lead a healthy, active life.
“We are delighted with how well the sessions have gone.”
Sue Rogers, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for a Safer and Healthier District, said: “These sessions are a great example of how different partners can come together to help ‘solve’ a community issue.
”Hopefully the sessions will run again next year and more young people will get the chance to get involved.”
