SNOW: The guide to gritting in West Sussex

New gritters

New gritters

West Sussex County Council is currently deciding when and where to grit following snowfall today.

Parish Councils and Horsham District Council help clear pavements and footpaths, but it is the County Council is responsible for clearing roads excluding motorways.

West Sussex is divided into three forecast areas to reflect the diverse weather conditions experienced across the county.

Every day around lunchtime a 24-hour weather forecast for each forecast area is received together with road temperature sensor data, to enable the duty manager to decide on what action to take. There are three decisions that can be made:

Action: Gritting on one or more of the three forecast areas

No action: Temperatures show that there is no need for the gritter to go out.

Delayed decision: Further weather forecasts are received at 5pm and an action or no action will be made.

Road temperatures vary greatly across West Sussex especially between the three different forecast areas, which may result in different decisions being made in the grit areas and is why they may be treated at different times.

Every day at 2pm The gritter Twitter tweets to let people know what the outcome of the decision is and if action is being taken on routes.

You can follow the Twitter feed @WSCCgritting on Twitter keep up-to-date or anyone not on Twitter can see the updates at https://twitter.com/wsccgritting

See the County Council websitefor more information and to look at the roads around you which are on the gritting schedule.
