The county council says it has been urged by parents, heads and chairs of governors to conduct a review of education provisions within Steyning and Storrington.
In response to this, West Sussex County Council has confirmed it will look into ‘a potential change to the age of transfer’ and ‘enhance the existing provision’.
WSCC news manager Nigel Galloway, confirmed that the council will look at ‘all schools in the area.’ He added: “It’s just at an early stage.”
Education provision in the Storrington area differs from other parts of the county. Pupils attend Storrington First School from reception until year five. Rydon Community College is a middle school, taking pupils from year six to year eight.
Students then join neighbouring secondary schools, including Steyning Grammar, from year nine for their exams.
In a statement, the county council said: “Schools have voiced their support for the consideration of a new pattern of education in the area.
“Heads and governor representatives from schools have met with the Cabinet Member for Education and Schools, Peter Griffiths, as well as West Sussex County Council officers, to share their thoughts and ideas.”
The Cabinet Member has called for data including future pupil numbers, school capacities and information on the impact that change, like age of transfer, could have on the outcomes for all young people.
The Cabinet Member expects to provide a further statement in the spring.
