Storrington and Sullington Parish Council has backed Waitrose’s revised expansion plans in principle following a meeting on Tuesday evening .
Five members of the public spoke against the plans, arguing the proposed development would swamp Storrington and threaten local traders.
The one person to speak in favour of the application was Waitrose property manager Mark Dawkins.
Traders expressed fears for the future of their businesses, and concerns about the year-long demolition and construction process.
A claim that the expanded store would reduce traffic and pollution was greeted with derisory laughter.
The parish council took into account comments submitted by Horsham District Council’s conservation officer and public health department, who were satisfied with amendments. It also took on board the county council’s acceptance of a Waitrose traffic assessment.
Parish council chairman Anna Worthington-Leese said: “The parish council is made up of unpaid volunteers, committed to working for the community. It would be remiss and foolish to ignore comments submitted by professionals .
“There are still some concerns about detail and any impact upon existing trade during and after construction. We are committed to working together with local businesses and Waitrose on any problems .
“It is important to have a proper entrance on to Old Mill Drive to encourage shoppers to visit the rest of the village and a condition should be for additional Waitrose funding for air quality measures if traffic increases due to the store.”
Save Our Storrington chairman Peter Westripp said: “There are excellent community and planning grounds to oppose this scheme.
“There is no evidence of any support.
“We will fight it and campaign to win.”
