Record recycling for county

RECORD recycling rates have been reached at West Sussex County Council's network of 11 Household Waste Recycling Sites.

Last year, 62 per cent of all waste was recycled at the sites, run on behalf of the county council by Viridor Waste Management.

The top month was September, when 66 per cent of all waste was recycled.

Derek Whittington, county council cabinet member for strategic planning, said: "In 2008, our network of Household Waste Recycling Sites received and processed more than 108,282 tonnes of household waste. That's enough to fill Wembley stadium!

"It is a fantastic achievement to have been able to recycle more than two thirds of this. This has only been possible because of the efforts of the people of West Sussex, who are now among the best in the country for recycling.

"I would also like to praise the helpful, friendly and motivated teams at our sites and to our partners Viridor for so efficiently managing the sites."
