Raising awareness of older people’s needs in West Sussex
Staff from West Sussex County Council’s three Prevention Assessment Teams will be raising awareness of older people’s issues next month.
The teams will be providing health and wellbeing advice and promotion, and are aimed at adults and older people not receiving services from specialist teams.
They will be marking UK Older People’s Day (Monday 1 October) – the sixth year the day has been marked in the UK – and the first year of West Sussex County Council’s Age with Confidence agenda.
The events will also coincide with the United Nations’ International Day of Older Persons.
The County Council’s recent report on life in the county – West Sussex Life –shows that 166,600 residents are aged 65 or over, equating to a fifth of the population and will rise further. Of these 26,800 are aged 85 or over.
The County Council wants to make sure that people are confident in preparing for and living well in old age through its Age with Confidence agenda.
Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for health and adults’ services, said: “West Sussex has an ageing population, which is leading to changes in the way we think about services and in the way that we deliver them.
“We also want to make sure that people are ageing with confidence and are able to continue to play a full part in their local communities.”
Pamela Corrin, clinical service manager, Sussex Community NHS Trust, said: “By working together, we can offer services for our older population that are easy to use, in line with what local people say they need and want. Our teams provide information, education, advice and support allowing older people to be as independent as they can be.”
UK Older People’s day is a national celebration of the achievements and contributions that older people make to society and to the economy and to start tackling negative attitudes and stereotypes.
