Primary pupils celebrate the arrival of year of the snake

Pupils made lanterns, performed dragon dances and tried oriental food for the first time in their Chinese New Year celebrations.

Steyning Primary School saw in the year of the snake last Wednesday as teachers organised an entire day of Chinese-themed activities.

Key Stage team leader Cara Provost assisted children with making their paper snakes.

“We’ve involved reception, year 1 and year 2 classes,” said Mrs Provost, “so they know how different cultures celebrate the new year.”

The children also had the opportunity to sample Chinese food courtesy of Bramber Dragon Chinese Restaurant in Steyning.

Six-year-old Tally Walker divulged her love for dragon dancing and Chinese food.

She said: “I liked the dancing and I’ve had Chinese before - it’s yummy, especially prawn crackers.”

However, Max McIvor, 6, has never had the pleasure, until now.

Mrs Provost was thrilled with the children’s efforts.

“They’ve had a fantastic time and have worked well as a team. They even learnt what Chinese year they were born in.”
