Police report few World Cup disorder problems
SUSSEX Police report that there were no major incidents of disorder or violence in the county following the World Cup match on Sunday afternoon (June 27).
Nine arrests, and nine incidents of disorder at licensed premises, are being linked to the football.
This is very similar to the pattern seen after the previous three games.
Across the force area after the US game on June 11 there were five arrests, and six disorder incidents at licensed premises, linked to the aftermath of the game.
The corresponding figures for the Algeria game on June 18 were 14 and seven respectively, and after the Slovenia game on June 23 the figures were seven and eight respectively.
Extra patrols were on duty across Sussex during and after the game on Sunday afternoon to respond to any public disorder incidents.
Chief Superintendent Paul Morrison said; "We wanted everyone to have fun in safety during the day and by and large that happened. Once again it shows that the vast majority of fans are law-abiding and peaceful, and that there just a few who use events like the World Cup as an excuse to cause trouble."
Local officers worked with local authorities and licensees from pubs and clubs to deter trouble before it started.
Licensees were asked to help people safe by, for example, providing drinks only in plastic or polycarbonate glasses and bringing to police attention any trouble-makers.
