Part of Haywards Heath sealed off for four hours after explosion fears
Part of Haywards Heath was closed off for about four hours today (Saturday) after reports of a potential explosion at Sainsburys.
Police sealed off the area around Bannister Way and Market Place from noon until about 4pm.
Sainsburys evacuated the store and police followed up by setting up cordons and closing roads.
The Fire station at nearby Mill Green Road was also evacuated and 999 workers set up in the police station at Bolnore Road about half a mile away.
Explosives experts were called and a "robot" device used to check the reportedly suspect item.
The area was later declared safe after it was found the item was a battery for a mobility scooter.
Sussex Police said the store was being evacuated when officers arrived and that decision had been taken by the store.
Fire brigade headquarters authorities would not comment on the incident.
Fire fighters from Haywards Heath were alerted to deal with any potential incident.
