Old brew goes down a storm

HORSHAM brewer Ray Welton has toasted his success after the Sussex branches of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) awarded him the prize for best beer.Praised for his Horsham Old brew which people have been enjoying for the past four months, Ray said he was "chuffed to bits" to receive the best beer award from local drinkers. The beer, which is brewed at the Railway Yard, has received a favourable reaction from people in the area and so far a staggering 36,000 pints of Horsham Old have been brewed.Ray said: "It has been very popular and has been a major success for us. I've had lots of responses from people sending me emails and ringing me up to say how good it is. I leave it to them that drinks it to tell us to how good or bad it is."And Ray described a pint of Horsham Old as "dark, rich, smooth with a warming feeling which helps gets you through these dark dismal winter evenings".Taking part in the twelfth Sussex CAMRA beer and cider festival in Hove, Ray explained that organisers requested five of his different beers for the three-day event.Throughout the festival CAMRA members and the public sampled more than 140 beers, before casting their vote for the best brew.Peter Mitchell, festival publicity officer, said: "Weltons did really well. People enjoy coming along to the festival and there is a demand for beers like this as opposed to the lagers you get in the pubs. It goes down very well."Anyone who would like to try Horsham Old can purchase it from The Beer Essentials shop in East Street, or visit the Bedford pub or Lynd Cross in the town, or The Sportsman in Amberley among others.
