Nomination deadline for Youth MP elections approaches

Young people aged between 11 and 19 years old have one week to come forward for the next UK Youth Parliament elections and run their own election campaign.

They can register their interest online on the Your Space website at www.yourspacewestsussex.co.uk/elections2013 before Friday January 18 for the online elections between March 1 and 29.

West Sussex is covered by four UK Youth Parliament areas each of which have a Member of Youth Parliament (MYP) and a deputy MYP.

West Sussex County Council cabinet member for children and families Peter Evans said: “Our MYPs represent the views of young people in their constituency and relate to decision makers at local, regional and national levels.

“It’s important that the views of young people are heard and used to inform decisions and the MYPs, together with our West Sussex Youth Cabinet, play a vital role in that.”

South East regional meetings are held every two months for West Sussex MYPs to attend. They also have monthly meetings with the West Sussex Youth Cabinet and go to an annual sitting of the 500 MYPs and a day of debate in the House of Commons.

Candidates will receive a pack explaining more about the elections, the Youth Cabinet and information on running an election campaign. For more information visit the Your Space website or www.ukyouthparliament.org.uk
