Mum-of-two Gemma Clark says she’s had problems with vermin at her two bedroom maisonette since she moved into the property in Barn Close, Pease Pottage, nearly four years ago.

She says her kitchen has become a no-go area for her daughters Tiffany, four, and one-year-old Ruby because of the mice.

“They get in my food, go behind the cooker, and are walking about in the kitchen - they cause diseases - so I have to keep my girls out of there,” she said.

“I also have loads of red spiders in my bathroom, all over the ceiling, just crawling about.

“I think they’re coming in through the vents.”

She says she has complained to her landlords - Affinity Sutton - and has had to call out pest control on several occasions.

“I’ve called them out three times , but it costs £60 a time and I just can’t afford it any more.”

She says her rent has recently gone up to nearly £720 a month and she’s having to pay another £300 for storage heating.

Now she’s desperate to find somewhere else to live and wants to move nearer to her mother in Haywards Heath.

“I want to be moved to get out of here but no-one is helping.”

She said she works nights at Tesco in Burgess Hill while her children’s partner looks after the children.

However, she said, she suffered from depression and anxiety and the worry of the proplems with her house “is all making it worse.”

A spokeswoman for Affinity Sutton said: “We are sorry that Miss Clark is experiencing pest issues.

“Pest control falls within the resident’s responsibility and if defects in the property are identified as the cause we will then rectify these.

“Prior to today we do not have a record of any jobs being raised with our contractor in relation to pest control however an appointment has now been scheduled for next week to block some possible entry points.

“We hope this will resolve the situation permanently.”

House mice carry bacteria and viruses, the most significant being salmonella and Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV).
