More time to decide housing strategy ‘delights’ councillor

Developers and councillors have said that being given more time to sort out the new housing strategy should be viewed positively.

Claire Vickers (Con, Southwater) said: “I am delighted that the council has delayed its preferred housing strategy.

“We need more time to make sure we get the best possible solution to this most difficult of issues. There are still a number of concerns being expressed by members which have yet to be fully answered.

“It is incumbent on us as members to consider this matter very carefully and take into account the concerns of our residents.”

Gordon Lindsay (Con, Billingshurst and Shipley) added: “It’s one of the most important things that the council does, setting the house-building targets.”

He added: “It has to be right so taking a few more months is important.”

Brian Donnelly (Con, Pulborough and Coldwaltham) said that he had great sympathy with the council officers over the extent of their task.

Adam Walker, of Crickmay Chartered Surveyors, said: “We have been working on the promotion of the North Horsham Development since 2009 when the Core Strategy Review was first published and at that time we expected a preferred strategy to be announced in 2010.

“Clearly this is a vitally important decision and one that will shape the future of the town and district and as such should not be taken lightly. It is clear that a consensus has not been reached by the members and as such a further short delay would seem sensible to get it right.”
