A spokesman for Sussex Police said it failed to stop for the patrol and police pursued the vehicle through Ifield. It was later found abandoned in Andromeda Close, off Gasson Wood Road.

“A police tracker dog was deployed and shortly before 5am the suspect was traced to Aquarius Court and detained,” the spokesman added.

Police said a 24-year-old man from Crawley was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, drink driving and theft of a motor vehicle.

He was further arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified and driving without a licence, officers added.

He currently remains in police custody.
