1,200 shoppers were delighted by some odd entertainment at one of the busiest ever New Horizons Appeal (NHA) Autumn Gift Fairs last week.

It was a fair day in more than one respect at Knepp Castle, Shipley, last Thursday (September 20) as the sun shone down on shoppers who enjoyed the company of some ginger pigs who freely roamed the event and even joined them on the polo lawn for tea.

Sally Pavey, a volunteer fair organiser, said the cute creatures were a great asset.

“Our parking volunteers had the added duty of marshalling the pigs as well as the cars this year.

‘The children that attended were delighted by them scampering around outside as were many adults.”

The large marquee buzzed with visitors who strolled around the 80 stalls helping to raise more than £20,000 for St Catherine’s Hospice New Horizons Appeal.

The Preview Night Fair on Wednesday (September 19) welcomed a record number of visitors and was a sell out for the first time in the fair’s history.

“I have to thank so many people for making this year’s fair such a wonderful success,” Sally added, “from Panino with excellent Italian food and charm to the volunteers serving teas all day; from the loan of garden seating by Newbridge Nurseries to Biffa collecting the rubbish at the end of the day.

“Without the help of so many local people and companies, we could not stage such events.”

The next event is the NHA garden and local produce fair which takes place at Summers Place, Billingshurst, on May 16 and The Lunch Club will soon be off to lunch with Horsham’s MP Francis Maude next month at the House of Commons.
