Join West Sussex Olympic Roll of Honour
WEST Sussex Olympians and Paralympians from the past, present and future are being rallied for the London 2012 games.
The initiative, West Sussex – Ahead of the Game, is calling on Olympic and Paralympic athletes with strong links to the county, whether they were born, living, training or educated here.
The aim is to compile a county-wide Roll of Honour and provide support for the 2012 Olympic hopefuls.
The area enjoys a rich heritage of sporting heroes, including 1992 gold and bronze medallist Sally Gunnell.
Olympic equestrian Tina Cook, who lives in Findon, achieved two bronze medals in Beijing 2008.
In addition, Paralympic judo competitor Ben Quilter studies at the University of Chichester.
Other West Sussex sporting legends include Suzanne Allday, who competed in the 1956 and 1960 games, and 1988 gold medallist Richard Leman.
Swimmer Duncan Goodhew, who grew up in Yapton, has even been commemorated with a street named after him.
County cabinet member for environment and economy Deborah Urquhart, said: "It's important we celebrate the heritage of sport in West Sussex and the achievements of these men and women – they're an inspiration to us all.
"But it's also essential we support those with talent who could be competing in 2012.
"They are the future medal winners and deserve our encouragement to ensure they achieve their full potential."
