In a flap over rare birds

A FAMILY of spotted flycatchers, an endangered species, has nested at a house near West Grinstead.

Lynda Whittemore identified them from a reference book after the parents nested in her Rookcross Lane garden.

The birds made one nest in a rose bush, but a hungry magpie ate all five eggs. Their next nest, much better concealed by foliage, is only inches below a bedroom window at the Whittemore house.

"It was with extreme excitement that we realised that they had successfully hatched four more," said Lynda. "My children enjoy having a peep at 'their babies' each morning before school and go in every other day or so armed with a photographic update for the nature corner in the classroom."
