On Thursday November 15 2012, people up and down the country will vote for one person in their police force area to represent them for policing for the next four years.
Locally, this will mean a significant shift in power from 17 members of a current Police Authority to one person who will represent the whole county of Sussex.
The Government’s decision to introduce Police and Crime Commissioners is to improve the democratic accountability of the police service to the public by enabling local people to vote for a commissioner.
Horsham District Council, which runs all elections locally, is now urging residents to return their completed voter registration forms to the Council as soon as possible to ensure they don’t miss out on their chance to vote on Thursday November 15.
Registering to vote is something that is required by law.
The information will then be used to prepare the Register of Electors 2013, which for this year will come into force on 16 October 2012.
If voters are away on Thursday November 15 or will find it difficult to get to the polling station they can apply for a postal vote.
This might also be helpful with these elections taking place at a time of year when the weather could be poor and it gets dark early.
