Did extra terrestrials visit Horsham this week?

A number of residents think so, after a strange pulsating sound was heard circling the town at around midnight on Tuesday (October 23).

It sparked an explosion of activity on social media from scared locals who feared the world was coming to an end or the suspected alien visit would herald a ‘zombie apocalypse’.

On Twitter @meggymeg80 posted: “Everyone in Horsham heard it and Southwater and here in Warnham - it’s the illuminati ENDING THE WORLD #that[is]cray.”

@jackr0berts said: “The UFO in Horsham is going to start a zombie apocalypse.” And @zoburling added: “We are under attack save yourselves!!!!”

Some were relieved to hear they were not alone in experiencing a close encounter with the third kind.

“Christ I thought I was the only one who could hear it!!! I am so scared it sounded like a pure UFO wtf why can everyone hear it,” tweeted @maeoliviaa. While @elliebeer warned: “Now is not a good time to be thinking about war of the worlds.”

Most reports of the unexplained noise came from the north Horsham area.

Paul Bearman, of Lambs Farm Road, was woken up by the sound. He told the County Times: “I thought it was the heating pump. It was a pulsating sound - you could feel it. It was circling above Horsham, and I was expecting to hear a big crash two minutes after.” The 35-year-old added that he was not ruling out the possibility of an alien visit.

Dianne Loates, organiser of Horsham’s Poppy Shop, described the sound as ‘a cross between a helicopter and a plane which didn’t last long’. She believes it may have been a UFO, as this is not the first time she has spotted extra terrestrials in the Roffey area.

“I believe there’s something else up there,” she continued. “I was walking home one night, it was clear, and there was a bright light hovering in the sky that looked like a star, but it was darting in different directions almost like a playful UFO.”

“I don’t think they mean us any harm, I just think they’re curious,” added Dianne.

Horsham resident James Smith described the sound as ‘a twin-engined plane with engines out of sync’.

But local photographer Toby Phillips thought he had the explanation. “Sorry about that, I was out on my hover board. Apologies to anyone that I woke up in the process ;-),” he said.

Jamesy Crockford added: “Think it was a chav in a loud car.”

But as speculation grew around a potential alien invasion, other Horsham locals attempted to bring believers back down to earth. Nick Jackson posted on Twitter a map of planes flying near Horsham at the time of the sound. Others said it could have been a Dash 8 aircraft with two propellers creating a different sound to the average airbus, a smaller plane or even a meteorite falling through the sky. Ryan Ryans-Disco wrote on the County Times Facebook page: “Yep little plane that was the sound then 30 min later was woken up to my van alarm when someone was near it not a good night sleep last night.”
