A proposal to scrap the Horsham town centre sculpture was approved at a Horsham District Council meeting on Wednesday April 27.

Speaking today (Tuesday), a spokesperson for the council said no date has been set for the removal of the fountain.

The spokesperson said: “The council is not yet in a position to comment on when the Shelley Fountain will physically be removed from its current position.

“We are still in the initial stages of engaging an appropriate contractor to undertake the removal of the fountain elements and are in the early stages of planning the landscaping concepts which will occupy the space at the end of West Street.”

The landmark has proved divisive among residents - with many celebrating the news of its upcoming departure.

It was installed in the Bishopric in November 1996.
