Horsham Remembrance Service plans confirmed

Poppy wreath for Remembrance day

Poppy wreath for Remembrance day

The War Memorial in the Carfax in Horsham town centre will be the focus of this year’s Remembrance Sunday service on Sunday November 11 2012.

The service will begin at 10:50am led by the Reverend Canon Guy Bridgewater, Vicar of Horsham, after the arrival of the parade at the War Memorial, when the service will begin with the hymn ‘O God Our Help in Ages Past’.

This will be followed by The Last Post.

The vicar will then lead the Exhortation:‘They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.’

The two minutes silence, in memory of the fallen, will follow at 11am before Leonard Crosbie, the chairman of Horsham District Council, will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of the Horsham District at the War Memorial.

He will be followed by David Copestake, chairman of the Royal British Legion Horsham branch, and Brad Watson OBE, West Sussex County councillor for North Horsham.

Representatives of the armed services and youth organisations will then lay their wreaths, each as a mark of solemn respect.

A blessing will mark the end of the service at the War Memorial. The Parade Marshall will call the Parade to attention and they will then march to the Parish Church of St Mary The Virgin in the Causeway, Horsham, for the Remembrance Sunday Service to which everyone is welcome.

After the service, the Parade will leave the Causeway and march back through to the Carfax where the Chairman of HDC and the Chairman of the Royal British Legion will take the salute.

Working with the church and district council, the Royal British Legion is the main local organiser of Horsham’s Remembrance Sunday service.

A number of Remembrance Sunday services take place throughout the Horsham District on this day.
