A small group of fundraisers have celebrated reaching the milestone of £400,000 raised for Cancer Research UK after around 40 years of collecting donations for the charity.

The Horsham Local Committee in aid of Cancer Research UK marked the occasion with a tea party hosted by the cancer charity at The Capitol in Horsham.

Barbara Pearson, chair of the group, from Horsham, explained raising money has become more challenging over the years, but said the group was proud to reach the figure.

She said: “It is a real achievement and a real boost to us.

“We will always continue to do what we do, it has changed a lot but we enjoy what we do and just try to raise as much money as we can.

“We have to appreciate we are all getting older and we can’t do what we used to do, especially when we are down to five members of the committee.”

The group have previously organised charity dinner dances and held a popular bazaar, but now host just two quiz nights each year.

Barbara joined the group in 1989 and became chair shortly after.

She added that the number of charity shops and the loss of venues such as the town hall in Horsham have added to the group’s challenges.

She said: “I wish I could work for lots of charities but I can’t, so I have to help the one that is nearest to me.

“For the majority of people in the group, cancer is close to their heart, and they stick with us.”

The group is hosting a quiz evening with a fish and chips supper in aid of the charity, to be held at The Barn in The Causeway on Saturday May 3.

Tickets are £10 each but you must book before. For more information contact Barbara on 01403 254776.
