Horsham Community Centre relaunch open day a success

A successful open day launched the new Holbrook Community Centre in Horsham last weekend.

The centre, in Holbrook School Lane, was handed over to the community by West Sussex County Council as part of the Active Communities Agenda.

Holbrook Community Centre is a new venture, run by the community for the community, and is a charitable organisation run by a management committee, formed primarily of Holbrook Youth Centre trustees.

The open day, on Saturday (October 6), was attended by many local families, and was a chance for the community to visit the centre and find out more about the facilities on offer and the range of clubs and organisations that already use the centre.

Organisations at the open day included Holbrook Youth Club youth workers, 3rd Horsham Scouts, the Brownie’s, the Holbrook Church, Over the Rainbow playgroup, and Horsham Young Rotary.

Ray Chapman, Chairman of the Management Committee, said: “The original founding force behind the youth centre was local councillor Enid Derby. We have made every effort to keep the centre open not just as a youth club, but more importantly as a wider community centre, and thanks to a lot of hard work from a lot of people we have been able to celebrate the official opening of the new Holbrook Community Centre.

“We are currently looking for more volunteers to come forward to join us in this new venture for the community, and in particular would welcome an accountant and solicitor to participate.”

Michael Brown (Con, Fernhurst), cabinet member for finance and resources, said: “Holbrook Community Centre is the latest Community Asset Transfer to have taken place in West Sussex.

“It’s a key example of the community taking on the running of an important local facility to guarantee its future.”

Peter Catchpole (Con, Holbrook) who sits on the Holbrook Management Committee, said: “The support of residents, businesses and organisations will help ensure the future success of the Holbrook Community Centre.

“Why not drop in to the centre and see for yourself the range of facilities and clubs the centre has to offer.”
