A painting by a Horsham artist has been selected to appear in a London gallery alongside works by some of the country’s leading female painters.

The painting by Angela Brittain, called ‘You Lift Me Up’, was selected from a record number of entries for the 153rd Annual Exhibition of the Society of Women Artists at the Mall Gallery, The Mall, London.

It is the fourth consecutive year that her work has been chosen to appear at the prestigious exhibition.

Describing her work of art Angela said: “It was inspired by some thoughts on how we all need a friend to help us feel more cheerful, when life has got us down and having that optimistic, strong person in our lives can make all the difference.

“It was painted in January so perhaps all that wet weather had something to do with it.”

The exhibition will be opened by HRH Princess Michael of Kent on Thursday June 26 and will continue until Saturday July 5.

This year was the first two-stage selection process of an online submission followed by shortlisting and final selection.

Founded as the Society of Female Artists, this unique group has held an annual exhibition in London of the work of women artists ever since 1857.

In the mid-nineteenth century, women were not considered to be serious contributors to the field of art and had great difficulty in obtaining a public showing.

At the first exhibition, 149 women showed 358 works, some hiding their true identities for fear of social recrimination.

Over the years, the exhibition has introduced many famous names to the world of fine art appreciation, and their works to well-known art galleries and public places.

In the lead-up to her work appearing in the London gallery, Angela’s paintings can also be seen during the two Horsham Artist Open Studio weekends.

The first is Saturday May 17 and Sunday May 18 at Roffey Park Institute, Forest Road, Horsham.

On Saturday June 7 and Sunday June 8 she will be in the Park Barn, North Street, Horsham. Both run from 10am to 5pm.
