A Handcross driver who died after his car left the B2036 between Ansty and Burgess Hill and hit a tree in the early hours of Sunday morning (January 27), has been named as Jay Ansell, 20.

The Volkswagen Golf was spotted by another driver shortly after 3.30am, but police believe that the crash may have happened some time before that.

Mr Ansell, of Truggers, Handcross, was found dead in the wreckage.

Sergeant Mark Baker from the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit said: “The vehicle had cooled down when we arrived, so we believe that it could have left the road some time earlier. We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the car off the B2036 Cuckfield Road at any time before 3.30am.

Soon after the crash people laid touching floral tributes to Jay at the scene of his death.

One read: “Dear Jay Rest In Peace. Look down with the Angels. Creaghan.”

Othetr tributes were paid on social media.

Anyone who saw the car driving in the area or off the road where it crashed is asked to call Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Southcott, or email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk.
