Care home workers and residents at Westhope Lodge, Horsham have been getting hairy this month to raise awareness for men’s health.

Three service users and 19 members of staff have sprouted moustaches for Movember, a cause which raises vital funds and awareness specifically for prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Some of team taking part, known as the ‘Hairy Carers’, have personal reasons for backing the campaign.

Chris Ansell, activities co-ordinator, told the County Times: “My grandfather has testicular cancer and my father has prostate cancer.

“A member of staff’s father this week has also just been diagnosed with testicular cancer and a few others have grandfathers that have been affected so it’s quite real and really hits home.”

This is the first year Westhope Care have collectively donned their newly-grown accessories in support.

Last year Chris took part in Movember on his own and raised around £170.

He added: “I did it when it was quite new and everyone thought I was crazy for growing a moustache but this year everyone I asked wanted to be a part of it.

“We haven’t got a grand total yet but we’re doing well and I think we’ve doubled what was raised last year.”

Although for a good cause, many have not been big fans of the facial hair. Mark Jones, senior care support, said: “I think a lot of people will be happy to get rid of it.

“Obviously some people have been personally affected by this but I don’t think they’ll be sorry to see them go.”

Sally Brooker, director of care, is looking forward to December 1. She said: “They’ve done very well but the taches are driving me mad and I just want to cut them off!”
