A headteacher of a Colgate primary school, which is celebrating a good Ofsted report this month, has paid tribute to her staff’s tireless work ethic.

Colgate Primary School, in Blackhouse Road, was inspected in October, and was upgraded from satisfactory to good by Ofsted, the official body for inspecting schools in the country.

The lead inspector said that pupils make good progress across the school, and were reaching standards in reading, writing and mathematics that were above average by Year 6.

Kate Powell, headteacher at Colgate Primary School, said: “We are obviously thrilled to know that what we believe to be true has finally been recognised by Ofsted.

“Our school are united as a team and we work tirelessly to ensure that the children in our care achieve the highest possible standards.

“We were particularly pleased that the inspectors noticed that the purpose of the lesson is made clear to all pupils so that they understand what they are expected to learn in each teaching session.

“I was delighted that the inspector noticed that the teachers at my school use imaginative methods to capture pupils interests.”

The report identified that school leaders are ambitious and have high expectations for pupils and staff. Since joining the school, the headteacher has built on the strengths of the previous leadership.

Year 5 pupils were interviewed by the inspector who said that they talked about, in positive terms, how they are expected to behave, how the school keeps them safe, and how it deals with bullying.

The inspector’s report said that to improve further the school needed to provide more opportunities for pupils to work independently, wider use of books in lessons, and ensuring its actions for improvement focus on a long-term vision, with these action points are already being addressed by the school.
