Challenged by his health club manager to prove his fitness, Cottesmore Hotel Golf and Country Club general manager Matthew Hazelden felt he could not back down.
On September 26, Matthew and Cottesmore’s Health Club manager Lee Basset hit the gym to complete four different exercises over twelve different distances adding up to a total of 41.5km, after securing sponsorship of almost £500 for the Streetgames charity.
Over a 5-hour period the pair ran for 16.5km, cycled for 15kn. rowed for 8km, and swam for 2km.
“We wanted to continue the feelgood factor of this unprecedented year of sport,” said a slightly out of breath Matthew afterwards. “What better way to do this than by raising money in the process? The Streetgames charity helps disadvantaged kids get into sport and enjoy the same opportunities that many of us take for granted.”
Cottesmore HG and CC, near Pease Pottage, is part of Crown Golf network of Clubs, the largest golf operator in Europe and this event was just one part of many activities that have been taking place across the network to raise money for this very worthy cause.
Matthew did confess: “I am not the fittest of individuals, and since my playing days as a professional golfer came to an end six years ago I have done very little in the way of exercise. But when Lee challenged and doubted me, my old competitive instincts took over and I embarked on a little training. Lee is a tri-athlete so I didn’t want to completely embarrass myself and I am delighted to have completed the challenge, although two days on I am slightly regretting it!”
