Garden stroll raises £5,900

DELIGHTED visitors to the Fittleworth open garden trail raised £5,900 at the colourful event.

More than 700 people strolled round the 13 gardens which were open to the public in aid of St Mary's Church in Fittleworth on Sunday May 3 and Monday May 4.

Mark Saunders, committee trail member and head gardener at Fittleworth House, spent most of the two days answering gardening questions from visitors to the event.

He said: "This is a thoroughly social event and it is so wonderful to see so many old friends as well as hopefully many new ones.

"Many people just love the chance to wander round this lovely village and the gardens being open is an extra bonus.

"We are taken aback by the generosity of people, especially with the credit crunch still big on everyone's minds."

The weather for the weekend was a mix of sun and cloud with only a few spots of rain towards the end of Monday afternoon.

Tony Boam, trail chairman, said: "What a tremendous weekend it was especially for the weather.

"The church is very grateful to all those visitors who turned out to support us, as well as to all the garden owners, people manning the village hall and helpers who are too numerous to mention."

Fittleworth open garden trail began in 1999 and it is popular with gardeners, families and indeed anyone who likes to walk in the fresh Spring air in the countryside of a picturesque village.
