Football hooligans warned not to fly to World Cup
IF you're a football hooligan and attempting to fly to South Africa for the World Cup, don't bother!" That's the message from Chief Inspector Ed Henriet of Sussex Police at Gatwick Airport.
A national operation that aims to identify known football hooligans attempting to travel to the competition is swinging into place and police officers at Gatwick will actively work to identify anyone attempting to leave the country who aims to cause violence and disorder at the competition.
Chief Inspector Henriet said: "Staff, visitors and passengers are likely to see some additional police resources and activity within the terminals over the World Cup period. A great deal of work has gone on nationally to build up an extensive database of known football hooligans. Gatwick officers will be looking for those people and anyone else who attempts to take on that role.
"Police officers will also be advising supporters travelling to the tournament about inappropriate items and behaviour. We all enjoy the banter between football fans but there is a point where this crosses the line and becomes offensive. We hope to help fans identify that point and ensure that the friendship that has built up between the fans over the years continues to grow.
"The aim of the national operation is to help make the World Cup a safe and trouble free tournament. Police forces across the country are working with their partners, both here and abroad, to achieve that. Our role at Gatwick, like so many other ports across the country, is essential to the success of the operation."
Sussex Police also work closely with the airport operator, Gatwick Airport Ltd, to ensure Gatwick is a safe and secure environment for everyone who travels though, works at or visits the airport.
