Fire service recruitment drive
AS PART of this year's recruitment drive, the Fire and Rescue Service in West Sussex is holding a series of events to encourage people from a wide range of backgrounds in the local community to consider a career as a firefighter.
It is hoped that these events will draw the attention of people from underrepresented groups within the service, and are particularly keen to encourage women and people from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds to think about firefighting as a career.
"We want the workforce to reflect that of the local community" says County Fire Officer Max Hood.
"So it is important that we reach out to people who might not have previously considered firefighting as a career."
Being a firefighter is more than dealing with emergencies – firefighters provide information that saves lives. "Understanding and making links with the community to get safety messages across is a vital role of a firefighter today." Says Max Hood.
"So we are looking for people with a wide range of experiences and skills to help us achieve that."
A career as a firefighter is open to everybody who can meet the requirements of the role regardless of their gender, ethnic background, religion or sexual preference.
The events will provide the opportunity for women and BME people to explore the role of a firefighter and find out more about the selection process.
Potential trainees will be able to try out part of the physical test, see some of the equipment and meet existing firefighters. Please note applications are not given out on the day.
