Fat-Boy-Swim takes to sea again this weekend

A five kilometre charity sea swim by three Pulborough brothers was abandoned halfway recently because of dangerous seas.

Now Dominic, Ben and Piers de Grouchy, aged aged 41, 30 and 29, have rescheduled the swim from Portsmouth through shipping lanes to the Isle of Wight today (Sunday, October 7).

The original aim was to raise £35,000 for two charities – Hope for Tomorrow, a national cancer charity providing mobile chemotherapy units, bringing treatment to rural areas, and Harrison’s Fund, working to find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

Despite the abandonment, they have already topped their original target, so far raising an incredible £44,000 with more money coming in.

Sponsors include Fatboy Slim, Jodie Kidd, Olympian Keri-Anne Payne, Sir Stirling Moss, and they have named their charity swim Fat-Boy-Swim.

Dominic de Grouchy, the ‘most senior’ of the three brothers, said: “Wow, we really launched this project last Christmas on the scale of a two-man dinghy. With the mind-blowing support we’ve had, I’d say we’re up there with a cross-Channel ferry – one last push and we’re in ocean liner territory! The support we’ve had is quite unbelievable.

“None of us had attempted anything like this before, so it’s really that fantastic support that’s kept us on track.”

Disappointed that the original event had to be called off, they are determined to see their charity effort through and are hoping for more favourable conditions on Sunday.

They will be a team of supporters, including other swimmers, kayaks, a pedalo and flotilla of cheering supporters when they resume their effort. The delkay gives an opportunity for everyone to boost the amazing £44,000 raised even further for these outstanding causes. See www.fatboyswim.com
