Elder abuse awareness day

FIND out more about safeguarding vulnerable people in West Sussex this World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The national day is held on Monday June 15. To mark the event, there will be displays during June in West Sussex Libraries on protecting vulnerable adults from abuse.

The displays will include information on the different types of abuse and who to contact if you suspect someone is being abused.

Adult abuse is where someone who is unable to keep themselves safe is ill-treated or neglected. They may be at risk and unable to defend themselves because of their age, mental health, a physical disability, a learning difficulty or physical health.

There are many different types of abuse including physical, emotional, psychological, financial, sexual or discrimination.

West Sussex County Council Leader Henry Smith said: "Vulnerable adults are often in a position where they are not able to protect themselves. We all need to play our part in being alert to the signs and symptoms of abuse and reporting any suspicions we may have."

The adult safeguarding pages on the County Council website have information including a guide on what to do if someone is suspected of being abused, information on the County Council's Adult Safeguarding Unit and what it does, and an alert form that people can use if they suspect someone is at risk of abuse.
