Dull and unattractive derelict centre to get revamp
A derelict building in Roffey is set to be replaced with a 24-bed specialist rehabilitation and recovery facility as a joint venture between Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and UK Mental Health Partnerships.
Planning permission to convert the Martyn Long Centre, in Crawley Road, was given assent by Horsham District Council’s development control north committee last week.
Roy Cornell (Con, Roffey South), said: “I’m quite delighted to see this application.
“To be truthful with you I was horrified to see builders blocking up the windows, I thought my god what’s going to happen here, a huge site that’s going to be derelict.”
However he and others questioned whether access to the site by construction vehicles from Crawley Road was feasible given the amount of traffic calming on the road.
Metres away from the entrance there is a pinch point and a keep left island.
Access from Oak Tree Way would be equally problematic, councillors argued, given the amount of on-street parking.
Mr Cornell added: “I would like to have a great input, purely on access to the site and what I see as parking problems.”
Simon Torn (Con, Roffey South) added: “I’m quite happy with this application given some of the buildings were dull and unattractive.
“I agree with Roy. Parking is a problem in Oak Tree Way.”
Godfrey Newman (LDem, Forest) explained that the site was originally occupied by the town’s workhouse.
He added: “Oak Tree Way residents would not be happy about lorries coming through.”
