Drive to reduce motorbike accidents

BIKER firefighters from West Sussex County Council Fire and Rescue Service are stepping up their drive to reduce motorcycle accidents.

They've taken delivery of a second FireBreak motorcycle – a Triumph Sprint ST with a flashy eye-catching livery.

It will be used throughout West Sussex to spread road safety messages to bikers in the county.

The new bike follows the success of the first, which was introduced to the service last year.

Peter Evans, County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection is an enthusiastic biker.

He said: "Our firefighters regularly witness the tragic consequences of poor riding skills when they attend road traffic collisions and have to rescue casualties from the wreckage.

"The new bike is a welcome addition in their fight to reduce motorbike accidents on our roads.

"It is an innovative and highly visible way for firefighters to get out and about talk to riders in the county as part of the nationwide BikeSafe initiative.

"Having a FireBike means they can break down barriers with bikers they are trying to educate about safer riding. Because the Fire and Rescue Service is not there to enforce the law, the firefighters are perhaps seen as more approachable."

The FireBikes will be ridden around the county by firefighters from:

Chichester – Tim Hale, Station Manager, and Kevin Lawrence, Resource Development Adviser.

Haywards Heath – Mick Cambers.

Horley – Sid Pysden.

"Their mission is to encourage safer riding and explain the importance of developing advanced biking skills.

"They'll be attending local biker hotspots and motorcycle events in an attempt to talk to as many West Sussex – and sometimes outside of the county – bikers as possible," said Peter.

They'll also be holding day-long BikeSafe courses with Sussex Police at Arundel Fire Station on the following Saturdays during the year on April 25, May 16, June 26, August 21, November 14. See www.bikesafe.co.uk for further details in Sussex.
