Spurred on by his experience at Horsham District Council, one member is standing for the county council elections after just 18 months in office.

Jim Rae (Con, Holbrook East) was elected to Horsham District Council in May 2011. Since that time he has become deputy cabinet member for efficiency and resources helping advise the budget and financial planning.

Now he plans to use that experience to persuade people to vote for him in the May elections for West Sussex County Council. However he is not yet disclosing the ward in which he plans to stand.

He said: “Now that I’m Roger Arthur’s deputy in finance and worked on the Medium Term Financial Strategy with Ray Dawe (leader of HDC) and senior officers to make sure the district’s finances and I would hope that if I were elected, which is no means certain, the powers that be would wish to utilise those same skills.

“I am not saying that County are unprepared, but if I can help to sharpen up their accounts that’s how I can see me being of service to the people.

“I am standing for one reason only and that is to hopefully win. I am not a paper candidate.”

The 12 divisions up for election in the Horsham District are Billingshurst, Bramber Castle, Henfield, Holbrook, Horsham Hurst, Horsham Riverside, Horsham Tanbridge and Broadbridge Heath, Pulborough, Roffey, Southwater and Nuthurst, Storrington and Warnham and Rusper.

Nomination forms are available from the District and Borough Councils and candidates can submit their nominations from March 25 up until 12pm on April 5.
