Digital radio for firefighters

NEW DIGITAL radio equipment that will significantly improve communications is being installed in more than 160 front line vehicles operated by West Sussex County Council Fire and Rescue Service.

This move will lead to the county's firefighters being linked to the nationwide Firelink project, which is being installed by Fire and Rescue Services throughout the UK.

The radios will be on the same network as the police and the ambulance service. They will improve coverage and give clearer voice communications.

Peter Evans, County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection, said: "The new Firelink communications equipment will result in significantly improved information and incident support for our firefighters for both for day-to-day call outs and major incidents."

The installation of the new radios – which will be either fixed or hand held – should be completed by May, when they will become operational.

County Fire Officer, Max Hood, said: "West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is glad to become a part of this long awaited programme. I look forward to our new communications system allowing us to work more closely with police and ambulance services.

"Firelink is a great opportunity for us to improve quality of communications. It will be of great benefit to our operational personnel and will improve our service to the general public."
