A developer behind plans for a crematorium in West Grinstead has appealed against Horsham District Council’s decision to reject the scheme.

Peacebound applied for planning permission to build the new facility ‘within a parkland setting’ off the A272 Cowfold Road on land next to The Orchard restaurant.

But the application was rejected by members of Horsham District Council’s Development Control South Committee in December 2013 due to the site’s location in the countryside and fears over road safety.

Both Cowfold Parish Council and West Grinstead Parish Council raised objections about the scheme on the grounds of no proof of need, and its inappropriateness in a rural location.

HDC received 161 letters of objection compared to 66 letters of support.

The appeal will be heard by the planning inspector in a public inquiry later this year.

Representations made at the time of the application will be copied to the inspector, but those wishing to make further comments can write to the planning inspector at 3/26 Wing, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Bristol, BS1 6PN, quoting the application number APP/Z3825/A/14/2216102.

A similar application by the same developer to Horsham District Council for a crematorium was rejected in October 2011.
