Crickmay surveyor sets sail on 3,000 mile Atlantic rally
Leading Horsham chartered surveyor Adam Walker has set sail in the ocean for a month, taking part in the ARC Atlantic Rally for Cruisers 2012.
As a member of Brighton Marina Yacht Club and the Chartered Surveyors Sailing Association, sailing is Adam’s passion and he has spent many a weekend competing or just sailing off the South Coast from Brighton where he has a mooring.
Adam deals with primarily business property at Crickmay Chartered Surveyors, based in Horsham.
On being asked if he was nervous at all about the 3,273- mile Atlantic crossing, he replied: “Only nervous that I have forgotten to pack something vital - I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
The yacht he is crewing on from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Rodney Bay in Saint Lucia is Raven, an Oyster 82. It was due to set off from the island on Sunday, but was delayed due to bad weather at sea.
The trip to America should take two weeks for the crossing if everything goes according to plan. The rally is timed so that the crews arrive in the Caribbean at the end of the hurricane season
The Canary Islands are located at the edge of the trade wind belt, so boats leaving the islands will sail south until they pick up the north east trade winds which then blow them west across the Atlantic.
People can follow the rally and see the crew’s log on the Atlantic Rally the website: www.worldcruising.com/arc/index.aspx There will also be updates on Crickmay’s Facebook page.
