The West Sussex County Times reached the semi-finals of the Horsham Rotary Club pancake race competition this afternoon (Tuesday).
Crowds gathered to watch the record 30 teams take part in the annual contest compered by children’s television entertainer Dave Benson Phillips.
County Times mascot Chipper was in the crowd cheering on reporters Jasmin Martin, Ollie McAteer, Anna Coe, Joshua Powling in the newspaper’s debut appearance.
They were up against The District Post in the first heat and although it was a close race, the County Times came out triumphant.
That was where the luck ran out though. In the semi finals, the team were up against YMCA, Winston’s Wish and Pavilions Kinetica and the newsteam came last.
Through to the final were YMCA and Winston’s Wish.
There were 12 massive mascots competing in the Ringway Giant Egg & Spoon Races including a Bear, Dragon, Lion, Hound, Rabbit, and Horsham FC’s very own Howie the Hornet.
Earlier Horsham District Council’s team with councillors Helena Croft, Jonathan Chowen, Roger Arthur and Claire Vickers, was the first and only team to be disqualified from this year’s contest for running.
All proceeds will go to charity, with the charity chosen by the winning team and the most nominated charity receiving a third of the money each. The remaining third will be divided between the best charity team in the races and the second most nominated team.
