Counterfeit £10 notes in Horsham

Counterfeit £10 notes have circulating in Horsham recently and police are asking anyone who thinks they may have been a victim to come forward.

On September 13 at 11.30am a member of the public was approached in Horsham town centre by a man who asked to swap a £20 note for two £10 notes.

However, after they exchanged and the man had left the scene, the victim realised the notes were fake.

He alerted a PCSO who managed to catch up with the man and found he had fake notes and he was arrested.

PC Emily Kemp said: “Police have discovered several reports relating to a man either attempting to purchase items in stores around Horsham with these fake notes or trying to swap these with members of the public, some of the people targeted have been elderly.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have been approached by this man or witnessed him approaching others, especially if any members of the public were duped into swapping their cash.”

A police statement says that a 40-year-old man from no fixed address has been arrested on suspicion of possession of counterfeit currency and bailed until November 7.

Ashley Patterson, 19, unemployed from Park Way, Horsham, was charged with knowingly using a counterfeit note with intent.

The statemenbt adds that he pleaded guilty at Mid Sussex Magistrates on October 2 and was given a 12 month conditional discharge.

Anyone who has information is asked to contact with police on 101 quoting serial 0625 of 13/09.
