Council leader to step down

LEADER of Horsham District Council, Liz Kitchen, has said that she will be standing down from the post in April.

The Conservative group will be recommending deputy leader Robert Nye (pictured) as her successor.

Mrs Kitchen (Rusper and Colgate) said: "Following the May 2007 elections, I made it clear to my colleagues in the Conservative group that, at the right time during the life of this council, I would stand down and make way for a new group leader.

"As we approach the start of the third year of this council, I think that the time has now come to start handing over the reins.

"I can tell you that the Conservative group met earlier this week and we will be recommending to council that Robert Nye, the current deputy leader, should be my successor.

"I will be around as both group and council leader until the council meeting in April.''

Mrs Kitchen was first elected to the district council in 1987. Mr Nye, who represents Itchingfield, Slinfold and Warnham, was first elected to the council in 1999.
